Billie Eilish live at Coachella [SHOW RECAP]

Billie Eilish returned to Coachella for her third performance for the headlining spot on Saturday. She’s an artist who has been able to show a new era of her music every time she comes, and her musical progression took center stage. Every aspect of her show from the stage production to instrumentals was taken to a new height in the set.

Billie’s stage was similar to what she’s been using on her most recent tour. The sleek, minimalist look is fitting for her music. On one side of the stage her brother, Finneas, is on guitar and keys as well as a drummer on the other side. The two musicians do a fantastic job of bringing her songs to life, going one step further than the recordings do in adding additional layers to the songs. In different parts of the set, a number of background dancers in dark outfits filled the runway portion of the stage, using their choreography to accentuate the energy of her music.

Her setlist was full of fan service as every project of Billie was featured. Within the first leg of her set, she played songs featuring everything from her new album to her 2017 don’t smile at me EP. She almost felt like an older artist who’s able to play the hits right alongside her new album cuts to the same amount of support. Though she didn’t spend as much time on the older material, I’m sure it was a nice moment for any fan to get to hear the songs that introduced so many to her music. About halfway through, Billie and Finneas performed acoustic versions of i love you and Your Power. It was a nice change of pace that allowed the audience to sit back and really soak in the talent of the sibling duo.

The performance was not devoid of special guests. Khalid made an appearance for their 2018 collaboration lovely. I thought this was a nice throwback to when they had performed this together at a previous Coachella that feels so long ago now. A big surprise was one Damon Albarn of the Gorillaz coming out to perform Getting Older. He even did Feel Good Inc. alongside Posdnuos. That was a great moment that I didn't see coming.

Billie has shown her growth time and time again. I’ve gotten to see her perform three times now, all during different eras of her music. I’m glad she’s taken the initiative to progress her shows forward to become something special each time. It’s always interesting to see the different choices that she makes to improve upon her performances. I’m looking forward to seeing in the future where she decides to go. She’s still so young, so anything is really possible.
