In the blazing heat, Giveon was the refreshing performance that we all needed on Saturday of Weekend 1. I didn’t realize it until the set, but the significance of him performing was much greater than on the surface. Giveon was a star who arose during the pandemic, launching into a career that is already filled with chart success and Grammy nominations. For him to perform at the first Coachella back from the pandemic is a truly special thing. He addressed this in a little intro video that played, and it was a warm reminder of what that moment meant.
Watching his performance, one thing stood out to me. Giveon was born to perform. His demeanor on stage is that of a seasoned veteran. He moves with such grace and confidence in a way that accentuates the music. I found myself being taken aback again and again when I realized that he has only been doing this for such a short amount of time. Even in the little interludes when he spoke to the crowd, he addressed everyone with such ease and collected energy it was like he was speaking to an old friend. The presence he brings is almost that of an old school vocalist with his glass of wine and familiar spirit.
If anyone doubts Giveon’s talent, don’t. He is the real deal. His performance was absolutely stunning. From the soft moments to the roaring highs, he never missed a note. There is so much power behind his beautiful voice. It is really stunning. It brings home the emotion on so many of the heart-wrenching tracks that he played. Giveon was supported by a wonderful live band. They were fantastic and supported him perfectly as they brought out so many of the key moments in the songs.
Seeing where Giveon already is as a performer right now is astounding. I knew he was an amazing artist before this performance, but what I saw made me realize that he is going to be a superstar. He has the makings of one in every which way. I’m for sure going to be keeping a closer eye on Giveon and what he does next because he proved that he has everything that it takes to be at the top of his craft.
