Lowertown - Artist Spotlight

Meet Lowertown, the indie rock duo, hailing out of Atlanta, Georgia. Made up of Avsha Weinberg and Olivia Osby, the group has a bright future ahead of them in 2022.

The two meet in high school, noting their interest in music as a reason for becoming friends. Both artists were respectively working on their solo projects at the time. They both continue to release music on the side under the names "Olivia O" and "Avsha the Awesome." Their solo projects are masterful additions to their expanding catalog as a band and layout the foundation for what was yet to come when they started writing together. Leading up to their first release, they performed together a couple of times. Avsha played with Olivia for a performance under her solo act. They then came together in August of 2018, playing under the name "Lowertown" at a local house show for the first time. After this performance, they worked on putting out their first album.

"Friends," the debut record of Lowertown, would be released in January of 2019. The collection of tracks is a simple, yet beautiful combination of Olivia's soft and elegant vocals with Avsha's DIY production. It is filled with catchy guitar picking and unorthodox drum beats that will grab your attention from start to finish. Olivia shows off her beautiful voice, gracefully providing melancholy lyrics filled with a warm nostalgia of youthful times. Avsha also provides background vocals throughout the album, adding an extra layer on top of it all. It's a fresh take on a number of genres that leaves you wanting more. (Tracks to check out: Caroline, George, and Charlie)

Between playing their first live shows at venues and finishing up high school, the duo signed to Dirty Hit, a London based record label. Lowertown finished up their debut EP for the label during the pandemic, releasing "Honeycomb, Bedbug" in December of 2020. The matured sound of the band was readily apparent from the start. Building on their previous sounds, they leveled up their technical abilities all around. Olivia experiments with different sides of her vocal range raising and lowering her register throughout to accompany the changing thematic tones of her masterful storytelling. Avsha's guitars feel sharp as ever using his technical skills to beautifully layer his playing to form an ever encompassing wave of sonic bliss. The record deals with growing up and ever changing times filled with moments of hope and despair. (Tracks to check out: Best Person You Know, Tourist Trap, and Alone Again My friend)

Lowertown flew to London at the tail end of 2020 to record their next EP. The second EP from the band "The Gaping Mouth" would be released in September of 2021. Experimenting with new sounds and song structure, Lowertown once again topped their previous work. Unexpected highs and lows allow each track to unexpectedly play with your feelings, taking you to new emotional heights throughout the project. Olivia shows off her ever expanding lyrical abilities. Her writing tells a new story in each track. She walks you through a visual journey with her words, painting vivid yet open pictures that the listener can place themselves in. Avsha's instrumentation ranges from simple plucked strings to powerful layers of beautiful guitar chords to vocal samples paired with euphoric synths. The EP is a testament to the ever growing musical prowess that Lowertown possess. (Tracks to check out: Seaface, Burn On My Own, and The Gaping Mouth)

Though still in the beginnings of their career, Avsha and Olivia present their ability to grow in the way they approach a song, giving you something new every time. They are still continuing to release music with their debut album under Dirty Hit releasing in 2022! Stay tuned to the journey of this talented music duo, as I'm sure you'll be hearing a lot more of them soon.
