PAIN MUSEUM - Brevin Kim [ALBUM]

The genre-blending Boston duo, Brevin Kim, have released their new album, PAIN MUSEUM. With some parts of the album being two years in the making, the project has been carefully curated by the two for some time. Now, the two artists have released the album with eye-catching visuals that are as captivating as the music. The sound is refreshing with its rough edge and melodic qualities forming a hell of an experience.

Brevin Kim leans into heavy bass and distortion with a punk rock quality over it all. It's a dynamic and adrenaline filled sound that keeps you on your toes at all times. Whether it's heavy guitars filled with noise or trap drums, they selectively pick instrumentation that they are drawn to in order to create the final product. They never lean in too hard in one "genre" because they clearly know what they like, so they use those elements in order to pave their own path.

The lyrics of the project are filled with angst and pain, fitting right into giant instrumentals. Though the themes of the project stay the same, their performances vary due to the ever changing tonality of the songs. The sonics stay consistent throughout, but the two mix it up consistently from massive bangers to more melodic somber cuts. They experiment with more of a punk-rock style of singing in LINCOLNSHIRE as well as more straight rap delivery in KEEP RUNNIN. PAIN MUSEUM flows between the two seamlessly, allowing the project to show multiple sides of the artists. No matter what the tone of the song, the auto-tune used gives their vocals the feel of another instrument in the overall production. Their ever-changing delivery and cadences find their way to add a new intriguing layer to their work.

The mix of the project is impressive to hear. With so much happening at one time, they find perfect proportionality between the layers of instrumentation. It balances out the abrasive tendencies of the songs to never be over done. Distortion is pushed to create an absolute blasting sound, but it never is made to be overwhelming. The result makes for some amazing songs that are primed to be blasted at full volume. You can clearly see the time that was put into the project as they keep applying the intensity and little intricacies in the music from start to finish.

The creativity of the duo is unmistakable. Their fresh take on different genres and sounds creates a whole new experience for the listener. With this release, Brevin Kim have shown that they are able to go their own way and do it with dominance. On top of that, the visual elements for their project show a cohesion and artistry that can go beyond the listening experience. After watching the attached visualizers that have been released, they create a tangible quality to the project, so you can see the music as you listen. With such a well-rounded approach to a release, I am excited to see and hear what they can do next.

Be sure to give the album a listen below!
