Slowthai live at Coachella [SHOW RECAP]

I was able to watch Slowthai perform at the Gobi stage on Friday of Weekend 1. The beginning of his set seemed to be plagued with sound issues. From the second he walked on stage, he was asking for the sound engineers to put up the sound in his ear continuously to what seemed like no response. Whether they ever really got resolved or not, Slowthai continued with the show. Ever since then, he seemed to have a bit of pissed energy throughout the set. Whether that was from the sound problems or the crowd energy, who’s to say, but he proceeded to perform regardless.

He started off his set with a collection of tracks from his 2021 album, TYRON, including MAZZA, CANCELED, and DEAD. The songs were met with much fan support. His set up on stage was pretty minimal with the LED set playing freaky graphics that were pretty similar to what we saw with the visuals attached to TYRON. Song by song the energy started to really go up one notch at a time in the crowd. I’d say it hit a peak when Slowthai called for the crowd to split right down the middle for his insane banger, Psycho

featuring Denzel Curry. Denzel actually was able to make the set and came out to offer his energy for the track. This song was definitely one of the high points of the set as the crowd and two rappers were giving it their all.

From there, Slowthai previewed an unreleased track and played his collaborations with Gorillaz and Mura Masa. He slowed the set down with feel away featuring James Blake before breaking out Barbie Girl for his final track of the day. Yes, that song. The mosh pits were just as big for Barbie as they were for any other song he played.

Overall, his show was messy and rough around the edges, but I wouldn’t really want anything less from Slowthai. He brought the energy and a heap of solid tracks, so there’s nothing to complain about. If his set was beautifully polished and impersonal, it would feel out of character for him. It was carefree and entertaining, which is exactly what makes Slowthai fun in the first place. Be sure to check him out for weekend two, and hopefully his mic works from the start this time!
